What is ATEX?

ATEX refers to potentially explosive atmospheres where flammable gases, vapours, mists or dusts are present. In these areas there is a risk of explosion if conditions such as the combination of combustible material and ignition source are met. ATEX stands for "Atmosphères Explosibles" and is related to the EU explosion protection directives (ATEX 137 and ATEX 114), which define requirements for the safe design, equipment and working practices in potentially explosive atmospheres.

ATEX areas are divided into zone classifications according to the frequency of potential explosion hazard. Properly designed and installed electrical and automation systems and carefully selected equipment ensure safety and smooth operation in these demanding environments.
